Some would say it’s a southern thing to call lunch, “dinner”, but I disagree. I am from the south and have always known dinner to be the evening meal sometimes referred to as supper.

I wanted to take the time today and clarify once and for all just what LUNCH is and what DINNER is.

DINNER

Dinner by definition is a meal normally consisting of a combination of cooked, or sometimes uncooked, proteins (meat, fish or legumes), with vegetables, and/or starch products like rice, noodles, or potatoes.

The word “dinner” comes from the French word dîner, the “main meal of the day”, from Old French disner. A dinner can also be a more sophisticated meal, such as a banquet.

Dinner typically takes place in the afternoon, but due to changing work patterns in developed countries (like the United States), dinnertime has slowly moved later in the day. In the United States, dinnertime is eaten as late as 7 or 8 PM, with two notable exceptions (Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner), which are still eaten during the traditional afternoon time.

LUNCH

Luncheon, commonly abbreviated to lunch, is the midday meal.

In English-speaking countries during the eighteenth century what was originally called “dinner”— a word still sometimes used to mean a noontime meal in the UK, and in parts of Canada and the United States — was moved by stages later in the day and came in the course of the nineteenth century to be eaten at night, replacing the light meal called supper, which was delayed by the upper class to midnight.

Lunch was originally intended as a vehicle in which working classes could escape their job and purchase alcoholic beverages, a favourite being perry.

The mid-day meal on Sunday and the festival meals on Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving (in the U.S. and Canada) are still often eaten at the old hours, usually either at noon or between two and four in the afternoon, and called dinner. Traditional farming communities also may still commonly have the largest meal of the day at mid-day and refer to this meal as “dinner.”

While we are on the subject lets cover BREAKFAST

Breakfast is the first meal of the day. The word came about because it means breaking the fast after one has not eaten (fasted) since the night before.

Simple as that.

Now no one has a reason to argue or get it wrong. It is what it is.

Noel Gallagher is known for being controversial and his outspoken statements in the press. In a 1995 interview he expressed a wish for Damon Albarn and Alex James of rivals Blur to “catch AIDS and die”. I would also like to point out Mr. Gallagher’s hate towards artist Phil Collins. Mr. Gallagher said such things as “People @#$%ing hate cunts like Phil Collins, and if they don’t — they @#$%ing should” and “Why did he sell so many records in the ’80s? I mean, @#$%ing hell”, as well as “Phil Collins sells a lot of records but he makes $^it albums.” Also “Vote Labour. If you don’t and the Tories get in, Phil is threatening to come back from Switzerland and live here — and none of us want that.” He also referred to Collins as “the anti-Christ”. Mr.Gallagher has not been shy about slating his idols either. When the Bealtes George Harrison accused Oasis of being little more than a “passing” fad, Gallagher replied “George was always the quiet Beatle, maybe he should keep that up.”

A friend emailed me this today and I just had to put it on my blog, its way too funny.
